CAPE ELIZABETH – It’s official, Cape Elizabeth has the best snow plow drivers in Cumberland County.
The team of two public works employees, Darren Brown and Josh Dennison, took first place at the 2013 Cumberland County Snow Plow Roadeo on May 1, hosted this year by Portland Public Works.
Two other teams from Cape Elizabeth placed 13th and 18th in the annual competition, in which drivers must maneuver a plow truck with attached wing plow through a course constricted by obstacles, features and turns designed to simulate typical winter road operations.
Public works departments from Cumberland, Falmouth, Freeport, Gorham, Portland, Scarborough, South Portland, Standish and Windham also sent teams to the event.
According to Cape Public Works Director Robert Malley, Brown and Dennison were assessed the fewest penalty points of 22 teams that competed, besting second-place Cumberland by 200 points.
Dennison also racked up the fewest individual penalty points of 44 drivers.
Cape and Cumberland will represent Cumberland County in the State of Maine Snowplow Roadeo, to be held in Skowhegan June 6. The winner of that competition will carry the banner for Maine Maine to the national championship in Estes Park, Colo., in September.
