Joshua Shea, an Auburn resident and publisher of the Lewiston Auburn Magazine, was arrested Thursday morning on charges of possessing child pornography.

Shea, 38, was the former publisher of the Windham Independent newspaper under a previous owner.

According to Maine Department of Public Safety spokesman Steve McCausland, the State Police Computer Crimes Unit arrested Shea at his home at 30 Paul St. He has a wife and two children and is a former Auburn city councilor.

Shea is charged with one count of possessing sexually explicit materials of someone under the age of 12. He was transported to the Androscoggin County Jail and bail was set at $500, with conditions that he cannot have contact with children under the age of 18, McCausland said.

Detectives acted on a tip, McCausland said. Shea’s computer was seized and will be analyzed by personnel at the computer crimes unit. Initial inspection of the computer showed hundreds of images of child pornography, McCausland said. His first court date was set for May 1.
