SEBAGO - Police are still looking for the man who beat and raped a 41-year-old woman last weekend after her car got stuck on a steep road in Sebago at around midnight.

According to Cumberland County Sheriff's Office Chief Deputy Naldo Gagnon, county detectives are working with New Hampshire and New England authorities in hopes of tracking down the man whom Gagnon describes as a "violent attacker."

He said the man, who was driving a pickup truck with New Hampshire license plates, stopped to help the woman after her car got stuck while attempting to summit a hill in Sebago during icy conditions just after midnight early Sunday, Jan. 21. Gagnon would not disclose where the woman resides or the road on which the incident took place.

The man is described as 6 feet tall, about 170 pounds and at the time was wearing a dark-hooded jacket, "beanie" style watch cap and gold-framed glasses.

"His vehicle is registered in New Hampshire so I'm going to say he's probably a resident of New Hampshire," Gagnon said.

The news has shaken the usually quiet community of Sebago, located on the western shore of Sebago Lake. According to the owner of one of Sebago's main social hubs - Barbara Cutting of Jordan's Store - nearly every customer who has come since Sunday has mentioned the attack.

"It's what you would expect it to be in a small community, Barbara Cutting said Wednesday. "There's hardly been one (customer) that hasn't mentioned it. It's upsetting in a small community. And you hope that she's OK. There's a lot of concern for her. It's just very unfortunate for everybody... There's a very tight lid on it - on who the victim is and where it happened - which there should be so not to further endanger the victim," Cutting said.

At the other social hub, Four Seasons Variety, longtime clerk Bonnie Jacques said customers are surprised, especially since the crime happened in the open, outside of the vehicle.

"We're all speculating on where the man is from, so I'd say there's a lot of guessing. It's a waiting game at this point," Jacques said.

Gagnon said the victim had been visiting friends in Oxford County and was by herself driving home when she got stuck on a steep hill in Sebago. Gagnon clarified that the woman's vehicle wasn't in a roadside ditch, but on the road unable to crest the hill.

The man, who was driving a gray or dark-colored full-size GMC pickup truck, stopped to help the woman. The man punched the woman in the face, raped and then robbed her. The woman, who was conscious during the entire episode, told police the pickup had a Ski-Doo sticker in the lower right corner of the back window and was towing a trailer with two snowmobiles, one yellow and one red.

Police are not disclosing what was stolen. Gagnon said the incident took less than 30 minutes. No vehicles drove by as the crime was occurring, Gagnon added.

After the man drove off, the woman managed to get her vehicle unstuck, drove home and called 911. She was taken to Maine Medical Center, where a nurse collected DNA samples, which police hope will lead to the identity of the attacker. A sex crime kit was sent to the Maine State Police Crime Lab in Augusta on Tuesday.

Gagnon said the woman's story is "believable" and that there had been "no previous contact between the attacker and the woman. She was not being followed from afar. It was totally random." The woman is "being very cooperative" with police, Gagnon added.

If apprehended, the man would face charges of gross sexual assault and robbery.

With 30 calls already and several agencies on the case, Gagnon is confident police will find the attacker.

"We're going to chase down every lead until we catch this guy," Gagnon said.
