WESTBROOK-A damaged bridge on Cumberland Street in Westbrook was noted in media remarks Thursday morning by President Barack Obama.

The president met with reporters to discuss upcoming jobs legislation. In remarks, Obama cited several locations across the country where more people may be put to work.

"In Maine, there is a bridge that is in such bad shape that pieces of it were literally falling off the other day. And, meanwhile, we've got millions of laid-off construction workers who could right now be busy rebuilding roads, rebuilding bridges, rebuilding schools. This jobs bill gives them a chance to get back to work rebuilding America."

All day Wednesday, the Cumberland Mills Bridge was closed due to a 7-by-11-foot hole discovered in the bridge deck. Workers from the state Department of Transportation spent Wednesday morning pouring new concrete to replace the broken section, and kept the road closed until the concrete had set well enough to make the bridge safe. The road was open as of Thursday morning.

While the president's remarks did not mention the Cumberland Mills Bridge by name, a staff member for 1st District Rep. Chellie Pingree told the American Journal Thursday that the White House confirmed Obama was in fact referring to the bridge on Cumberland Street.

"They identified it as that bridge," said Pingree spokesman Willy Ritch.

Pingree, in a release, said she supported the president's call for new legislation that would support job growth and the nation's infrastructure.

"Maine would stand to get a minimum of $138 million to Maine to fix roads and bridges, and this bridge in Westbrook is just one of the examples of our crumbling highway system," Pingree said. "Fixing up our roads and bridges would create good paying construction jobs, and so would the $120 million Maine communities would get under the jobs bill to keep teachers and first responders on the job and hire back some who have been laid off."

Welcome to the discussion.

Why doesn't obama cite his failed administration instead. The muslim marxist has pulled the wool over everybodys eyes for the last four to five years. He's not going to do anything for the cumberland street bridge but as long as he mentions it in a speech you libtards think that he mentioned Maine so we should vote for him.Soooo gullible to vote for a man and i use that word lightly that nobody knows where he came from and why he was tutored by the head of the black panthers and farrakan himself. You have no idea how bad he is taking down this country and trying to bring a revolution between the races in the United States.Make sure you keep the right to bear arms because you are going to need them in the coming years. This guy is a menace to our society and needs to be out of office. The Prince Write in the Prince for Mayor
