A recount requested by a candidate who lost the race for the District 5 South Portland Board of Education seat by just 13 votes will take place Monday at 4 p.m. in Council Chambers.
Also, Mayor Tom Blake said that the City Council's Nov. 16 meeting probably will be the date that the council appoints a candidate to fill the District 3 school board seat.
School board member Michael Eastman, who died unexpectedly in September, was running unopposed for the District 3 seat. His name remained on the ballot and received more votes than any of the over 200 people who got write-in votes.
The District 5 school board seat currently is held by
Stacy Gato, but she did not run for re-election. Political newcomers Alan R. Livingston and Tappan C. Fitzgerald II were vying for the seat.
On Tuesday, Livingston, a math teacher at Cheverus High School in Portland, garnered the most votes - 4,166. The city originally reported that Fitzgerald, who works in public relations for Hannaford, came in a very close second, receiving 4,152 votes.
But City Clerk Susan Mooney said she spent Wednesday, Nov. 4, going over voting tallies and found a discrepancy in the count of some hand-counted ballots that resulted in an extra vote for Fitzgerald, who now has 4,153 votes.
Mooney said that Fitzgerald submitted a written request for a recount on Thursday, Nov. 5.
Mooney said the recount must be held within five business days of the request. She said the charter requires that the City Council must supervise the recount so she was waiting Thursday afternoon to find out when a majority of the council could meet next week.
Fitzgerald said Wednesday afternoon that he asked for the recount because the vote was so close. "I'm simply looking for it to be right," he said.
